RequiemEvening in Memory of the Holocaust Victims

On 27 January a large memorial evening devoted to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was held at the Moscow theater “Helikon-Opera”.
It was organized by the Government of Moscow, Russian Jewish Congress (RJC), and Russian Holocaust Center with the support of the Federation of the Jewish Communities of Russia. More than 500 participants attended the evening. Famous public figures, government officials, diplomats, artists, war veterans and former prisoners of camps and ghettos, teachers, pupils and students were among them. There were representatives of the diplomatic corps: German Ambassador Rüdiger von Fritsch, Israeli Ambassador Zvi Heifetz, US Ambassador John Tefft as well as the ambassadors and high-ranking representatives of the Embassies of Armenia, Albania, Austria, Belarus, Hungary, Greece, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, France and other countries.
The President of RJC Yuri Kanner opened the memorial event. He read out the appeal of the Prime Minister of Russian Dmitry Medvedev and Chairman of the State Duma Sergei Naryshkin to the guests. ThePresident said the long-awaited news about awarding with the Order of Courageof Alexander Pecherskiy, a Soviet officer, who led the only one successful uprising in the death camp.
The official part continued with performances of the senior representatives of the capital's authorities. One of the most poignant scenes of the evening was posthumously awarding with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations of the residents of KislovodskAlexandra Zholtaya and spousesPaleniye, whose act of courage had become known recently.
